The
US National Anthropological Collections at the
Museum Support Center
In
1983, the Smithsonian dedicated a building in
Suitland, Maryland called the Museum Support Center
(MSC). With four pods already in full function
and a fifth pod opening this summer, the MSC has
over half a million square feet of storage space
for collections from most of the museum's departments.
For example, 2.25 million archaeological and ethnographic
objects from the Anthropology Department are held
at MSC (all human remains are kept in the NHB).
On this field trip, we will be shown some of these
objects: masks, baskets, ceremonial dress, weapons,
and many other material remains of cultures both
past and present, from Maryland to Mozambique.
Be prepared for a whirlwind tour of the world's
most breathtaking artifacts.
Is
there a particular culture or area of the world
