About
Plummers Island
Plummers
Island is a small wooded island in the Potomac
River near Cabin John, Montgomery County, Maryland.
It is about 9 miles upriver northwest from the
White House, Washington, DC, and is just downriver
from the American Legion (Cabin John) Bridge.
The island is separated from the Maryland shore
by only a narrow channel, that can be crossed
at the east end on stepping stones except at
high water.
It has been a favorite spot of the Washington
Biologists' Field Club for over 100 years. Established
in 1901 as a weekend retreat, Plummers Island,
called by the field club "the most thoroughly
studied island in North America," today
represents one of the most comprehensive, longest-running
biological inventories in the country. The island
has 846 identified vascular plants, 704 of which
are native (either to the island or to Maryland)
and 597 species of beetle have been recognized
on the island.
