Summary There were 176 applications received for review by the application deadline of Tuesday, 1 February 2005, of which 101 were complete. Following is a listing of all application documents recorded for the '05 summer session of the Research Training Program including the final status of each application folder. This total represents an 18% decrease in total applications received from prior years. One factor contributing to the applicant pool decrease is the limited number of research advisors listed as available to host students this session. During a majority of the application cycle only 9 staff were recorded as actively "seeking" to host a student. In addition, one key advisor, Rick Potts, had to cancel his availability to host a student. The December survey of staff availability showed 17 scientists officially "seeking" to host a student as part of the '05 summer RTP session, including: Anthropology: Bill Fitzhugh and William Sturtevant; Botany:Bob Faden; Entomology: John Brown; Invertebrate Zoology: Allen Collins, Kristian Fauchald, Jerry Harasewych, Duane Hope and Ellen Strong; Vertebrate Zoology (birds, fish, herps, and mammals): Bruce Collette; Mineral Sciences: Jim Luhr, Sorena Sorenson, Ed Vicenzi and Mike Wise; Paleobiology:Bill DiMichele, Brian Huber and Scott Wing. As part of the December survey the following researchers reported that, due to other schedule conflicts, they would NOT be available to host a student in the '05 RTP summer session: ANTHROPOLOGY BOTANY ENTOMOLOGY INVERTEBRATE

SCIENCES PALEOBIOLOGY Application status listing was automatically updated based on computer submissions. Beginning in January, the "Folder Status" column conveyed submission comments from the system administrator. Here RTP staff personally assessed the application data and confirmed if all materials had been received and were ready/appropriate for review. A "C" status indicates a COMPLETE application folder, "I" indicates an INCOMPLETE folder with parts missing, incomplete or inappropriate. Staff added to the comment section to further communicate problems identified. Statistics: The '05 applicant pool statistics followed the same trends recorded other years with no significant shifts. The majority of applicants, 76%, were women and in their Junior year (38%) with most applicants (39%) expressing an Anthropology focus. Preliminary data showed that the most requested advisor was Human Origins expert Rick Potts but after Rick withdrew his availability to host an '05 intern most applicants redirected their choice and selected other advisors resulting in another anthropologist, Bill Fitzhugh, being the most requested advisor. Following is a summary of the 2005 applicant pool. For a complete listing, go to statistics.
