28 May 2005 - 6 August 2005

A total of 15 undergraduate students were anticipated to join RTP Class of '05, including 2 students from the Notre Dame partnership program.

As the result of a catastrophic web server crash on 9 February 2005 resulting in the irretrievably loss of all data, the 2005 session of the RTP was canceled.

There were 176 applications received for review by the application deadline of Tuesday, 1 February 2005, of which 101 were complete. Following is a listing of all application documents recorded for the '05 summer session of the Research Training Program including the final status of each application folder. This total represents an 18% decrease in total applications received from prior years. One factor contributing to the applicant pool decrease is the limited number of research advisors listed as available to host students this session.

During a majority of the application cycle only 9 staff were recorded as actively "seeking" to host a student. In addition, one key advisor, Rick Potts, had to cancel his availability to host a student. The December survey of staff availability showed 17 scientists officially "seeking" to host a student as part of the '05 summer RTP session, including: Anthropology: Bill Fitzhugh and William Sturtevant; Botany:Bob Faden; Entomology: John Brown; Invertebrate Zoology: Allen Collins, Kristian Fauchald, Jerry Harasewych, Duane Hope and Ellen Strong; Vertebrate Zoology (birds, fish, herps, and mammals): Bruce Collette; Mineral Sciences: Jim Luhr, Sorena Sorenson, Ed Vicenzi and Mike Wise; Paleobiology:Bill DiMichele, Brian Huber and Scott Wing.

As part of the December survey the following researchers reported that, due to other schedule conflicts, they would NOT be available to host a student in the '05 RTP summer session:

ANTHROPOLOGY
- Mary Jo Arnoldi
- Adrienne Kaeppler
- Stephen Loring
- Dolores Piperno
- Rick Potts

BOTANY
- Vicki Funk
- Dan Nicolson
- Warren Wagner
- Liz Zimmer

ENTOMOLOGY
- Scott Miller
- Bob Robbins

INVERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY
- Steve Cairns
- Bob Hershler

VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY (birds, fish, herps, and mammals):

- Ron Heyer
- Tom Munroe
- Lynne Parenti
- Vic Springer
- Dick Thorington
- Rich Vari
- Don Wilson
- George Zug

MINERAL SCIENCES
-

PALEOBIOLOGY
- Dan Stanley
- Tom Waller

Application status listing was automatically updated based on computer submissions. Beginning in January, the "Folder Status" column conveyed submission comments from the system administrator. Here RTP staff personally assessed the application data and confirmed if all materials had been received and were ready/appropriate for review.

A "C" status indicates a COMPLETE application folder, "I" indicates an INCOMPLETE folder with parts missing, incomplete or inappropriate. Staff added to the comment section to further communicate problems identified.

Statistics: The '05 applicant pool statistics followed the same trends recorded other years with no significant shifts. The majority of applicants, 76%, were women and in their Junior year (38%) with most applicants (39%) expressing an Anthropology focus. Preliminary data showed that the most requested advisor was Human Origins expert Rick Potts but after Rick withdrew his availability to host an '05 intern most applicants redirected their choice and selected other advisors resulting in another anthropologist, Bill Fitzhugh, being the most requested advisor. Following is a summary of the 2005 applicant pool. For a complete listing, go to statistics.

CITIZENSHIP: The applicant pool included 124 US citizens from 41 different states, including Puerto Rico. International applicants made up 30% of the application set with 26 different countries represented.
GENDER: More than three-fourth of the students interested in joining the '05 RTP are women, 76%.
YEAR IN SCHOOL: As a program targeting undergraduate students, the majority of the RTP '05 applicants. 63% are from students in the early stages of their undergraduate career with most, 38% at the Junior (3rd year) academic level.

DISCIPLINE: Although many placements were available in Invertebrate Zoology this year, the trend continues with most '05 applicants expressing a preference for assignment within the anthropological sciences, 39%.

UNIVERSITY ATTENDING: The applicant pool includes students from 144 different colleges and universities. The majority of applicants are from institutions far from the Washington DC area with only 9 applications from the traditional "local" universities (American University, Howard University, George Mason University, George Washington University, and University of Maryland).

ADVISOR: Applicants selected 50 different potential advisors. The most popular research advisor selected is William Fitzhugh with 12 students identifying him as their top choice.

ETHNICITY: There are 40 applicants who self identified through an optional questionnaire that they consider themselves an ethnic minority. This seems to be a significant decrease from the 71 recorded last year. However, included in the '04 data are non-US citizens but for purposes of reporting only US minorities are reported. Of the 71 recorded last year 25 were US undergraduate students representing an ethnicity underrepresented in the sciences. Therefore, the applicant pool actually reflects a significant increase in applicants from underrepresented minorities. Clarification of how to record this is reflected in the '05 data.
