28 May 2005 - 6 August 2005

A total of 15 undergraduate students are anticipated to join RTP Class of '05, including 2 students from the Notre Dame partnership program.

There were 176 applications received for consideration in the '05 RTP. All documents were received on-line through the SOLAA (Smithsonian On-Line Academic Administration) system. Prescreening was conducted by on-line with each application reviewed by two different screeners. One prescreener was located off-site (California). The Prescreening Committee (Elisa Maldonado and Wendy Wiswall) completed their review at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, 2 February 2005. All application folders were reviewed, including incomplete folders. The committee nominated 96 semifinalists (56%) for further evaluation by scientific reviewers serving on the Scoring Committee

Following a final assessment and selection of review sets the semifinalist listing was released to evaluators at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, 2 February 2005. The scoring committee is composed of research staff and professionals from the NMNH scientific community as well as individuals from NMNH affiliated agencies and one former RTP participant. The semifinalist list was posted on the web at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, 3 February 2005. Following is a listing of the semifinalists

The Semifinalist review sets were determined based on several criteria including advisor selected and discipline. Review set vary in size from 12 to 22 folders per set. Each application was to be reviewed and scored by two different reviewers. Evaluators completed a 100 point score sheet for all application folders in their set. Elements considered during scoring included:

  • ACADEMIC BACKGROUND - (10 points possible)
  • ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE - (10 points possible)
  • NATURAL HISTORY BACKGROUND - (10 points possible)
  • MOTIVATION TO PARTICIPATE - (15 points possible)
  • CAREER GOALS - (10 points possible)
  • CAREER POTENTIAL - (10 points possible)
  • CAREER IMPACT - (15 points possible):
  • LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION - (10 points possible)
  • COMPENSATING CHARACTERISTICS - (10 points possible)

IMPORTANT: This posting of semifinalist status is not definitive. Due to regular adjustments in review sets, circumstances often dictate a change in status. This year in particular the percent of semifinalists interested in placement in the anthropological sciences exceeds the placement capacity. We anticipate conducting another, outside, review of applicants interested in placement in the biological and geological sciences. It's likely that some applicants interested in placement in the biological and geological sciences but not currently listed as a semifinalist will be forwarded to the finalist set to more closely match the review set to placement potential. No applicant should consider themselves completely eliminated from consideration for a position in the RTP until the final status is released and award notices are mailed - 8 March 2005.

Statistics: The '05 semifinalists includes 80% women. The majority of '05 applicants in the semifinalist set are in their Junior year (49%) and most semifinalists (40%) express an anthropology focus. For a complete listing, go to statistics.

CITIZENSHIP: The semifinalists include 77 US citizens from 37 different states and 19 foreign students representing 14 different countries.
GENDER: The semifinalist list includes 80% women and 20% men.
YEAR IN SCHOOL: The majority of the semifinalists, 47, or 49% are currently in their Junior year. There are slightly more underclassmen (freshman and sophomores), 25, selected for the semifinalist set than upperclassmen (seniors), 24.

DISCIPLINE: We anticipated placing 2 students in the anthropological sciences, 4-5 in the geological sciences, and 5-6 in the biological sciences. Most semifinalists, 38, identified anthropology as their preferred placement. The biological sciences are represented by 36 semifinalists and the geological sciences by 22 semifinalists. Thus:

Semifinalist review set
anthropological sciences:
40%
biological sciences: 37%
geological sciences: 23%
UNIVERSITY ATTENDING: The semifinalist set includes students from 86 different colleges and universities.
ADVISOR: Applicants selected 44 different potential advisors, many of whom are not available to host a student during the '05 RTP summer session.
ETHNICITY: There are 15 semifinalists who self identified through an optional questionnaire that they consider themselves an ethnic minority. There were 39 (41%) semifinalists who did not identify their ethnicity.
