Sulfur depletion on 433 Eros: Analyzing meteoritic analogs to compare possible causes

The NEAR Spacecraft entered the orbit of 433 Eros on February 14, 2000.

The NEAR Spacecraft measured the composition of Eros to be similar to an ordinary chondrite, except there was a depletion of sulfur.

Two theories for the cause of the depletion arose: the volatilization of sulfur during micrometeorite impacts or partial melting of 433 Eros.

  • Impact Volatilization
  • Partial Melting
