A total of 213 applications were received for consideration in the '04 RTP pre-screening. The Pre-screening Committee completed their review at 3:45 p.m. Monday, 2 February 2004. All application folders were reviewed, including incomplete folders. The committee nominated 138 semi-finalists (65%) for forwarding to Scientific Evaluators serving on the Scoring Committee. Following a final check, the semi-finalist listing was released and posted on the web at 6:15 p.m. that same day. Following is a listing of the semi-finalists.

The Scoring Committee was composed of fifteen members from the NMNH scientific staff. There were seven review teams with two or three reviewers per team. The review teams were:

SET 1: Behrensmeyer & Bobe (Potts only)
SET 2: Loring & Arbolino & Zimmer (Anthropology only)

SET 3: Schulte & de Queiros (foreign only)
SET 4: Melson & Woodman (geology focus)
SET 5:
Thorington & Pawson (biology focus)
SET 6:
Nestlerode & Robinson (biology focus)
SET 7: Russell & Dove (biology focus)

The Semi-finalist review sets were determined based on several criteria including advisor selected and discipline. Review set varied in size from 15 to 22 folders per set.

IMPORTANT: This posting of semi-finalist status is not definitive. Due to regular adjustments in review sets, circumstances often dictate a change in status. No applicant should consider themselves completely eliminated from consideration for a position in the RTP until the final status is released and award notices are mailed - 8 March 2004.

Statistics: The '04 semi-finalists included 73% women. The majority of '04 applicants were in their Junior year (37%) and most applicants (46%) express an Anthropology focus. The most requested advisor was Rick Potts. Following is a summary of the 2004 applicant pool. For a complete listing, go to statistics.

CITIZENSHIP: The semi-finalists include 113 US citizens from 35 different states and 27 foreign students representing 17 different countries.
GENDER: The semi-finalist list includes 73% women and 27% men, exactly matching the demographics of the total applicant pool.
