Databasing Moth Genitalia Facts

Significance of Databasing

Databasing of scientific facts makes it easier for scientists to find and share information. On-line access is simple and fast; it can be done from anywhere in the world.

Procedure

The subjects of this data-basing project are the snout moths (Family Crambidae). They were collected from many countries around the world. Entomologists from the Smithsonian catalogued the moths. Slides were made of the genitalia of the moths to determine their sex.

Microscope

A microscope is used to magnify and study the genitalia slides. Microscopical observations are used to identify or confirm the identity of the species.

Tools

Tools that are used for processing the data: the data notebook and a computer.

Entering Data

Sebastian enters the information from the notebook into an electronic data-base. The software used for this project is File Maker Pro.

Result

This is a completed entry in the database. This information will be available worldwide to any scientist or anybody who wishes to have information about the Smithsonian’s snout moth collection.

Acknowledgments

I thank the National Science Foundation for the grant funding (DBI-0243512) that allowed my RAMHSS internship at the Smithsonian Institution.

Thanks also to Mary Sangrey for her assistance and guidance, and to Elisa Maldonado for her advise. And especially, I thank Dr. Alma Solis for teaching me about data-basing and snout moths. Everybody in the Entomology Department made my stay fun and exciting.
