Short Case-Study of Key Issues Surrounding Gender and Economics in Mali
as Observed Through the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival
INTRODUCTION

Scotland, Appalachia, and Mali were represented in the Festival.

The
West African country of Mali has a rich cultural heritage.
-
The
role of women is continually important and
often separate from the roles played by the men.
-
The
first lens used was that of the eight women
presenting their regional cuisines.
-
A
second lens was that of the interpretation provided by members of
the Malian Diaspora in the U.S.

training of young women.

of aid agencies concerning women, training cuisine, and entrepreneurship
