A Short Case-Study of Key Issues Surrounding Gender and Economics in Mali as Observed Through the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival

INTRODUCTION

  • Scotland, Appalachia, and Mali were represented in the Festival.
  • The West African country of Mali has a rich cultural heritage.
  • The role of women is continually important and
often separate from the roles played by the men.
  • The first lens used was that of the eight women
    presenting their regional cuisines.
  • A second lens was that of the interpretation provided by members of the Malian Diaspora in the U.S.

MATERIALS
  • Digital Video Cameras
  • Digital and Analog Photo Cameras
  • Smithsonian Institution Libraries
  • Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage

METHODS

  • Conduct background research on Mali
  • Meet and get to known participants

  • Conduct interviews with “Foodways” Participants
  • Analyze and reflect on data collected in making connections with pertinent literature
