From an applicant pool of 202, a pre-screening panel nominated 142 applicants as semi-finalists. These 142 semi-finalists were then divided into ten (10) sets. Review sets varied from 11 to 18 applicants per set. Seventeen (17) members from the NMNH scientific community reviewed each application folder in their set. Most semi finalists were scored by two different reviewers. Evaluators completed a 100 point score sheet for all application folders in their set. Elements considered during scoring included:

  • ACADEMIC BACKGROUND - (10 points possible)
  • ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE - (10 points possible)
  • NATURAL HISTORY BACKGROUND - (10 points possible)
  • MOTIVATION TO PARTICIPATE - (15 points possible)
  • CAREER GOALS - (10 points possible)
  • CAREER POTENTIAL - (10 points possible)
  • CAREER IMPACT - (15 points possible):
  • LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION - (10 points possible)
  • COMPENSATING CHARACTERISTICS - (10 points possible)

There are many highly qualified students in the '03 applicant pool and decisions are proving extremely difficult this year. However, the following 50 applicants have been forwarded for further consideration. A panel of six (6) judges will evaluate all finalists applicants and nominate 11 students for a position in the '03 RTP. The remaining 3 position will be filled at a later time. Following is a listing of the finalists.

IMPORTANT: This posting of finalist status is not definitive. Due to regular adjustments in advisor schedules and funding availability, circumstances often dictate a change in applicant status. No applicant should consider themselves completely eliminated from consideration for a position in the RTP until final status is released and award notices are posted - 8 March 2003.

Statistics: The '03 finalists included 72% women and most finalists are in their Sophomore or Junior year (72%). Following is a summary of the 2003 finalist set. For a complete listing, go to statistics.

CITIZENSHIP: The finalists include 46 US citizens from 23 different states and 4 foreign students representing 3 different countries.

GENDER: The finalist list includes 72% women and 28% men.
YEAR IN SCHOOL: The majority of the finalists are Sophomores and Juniors.
DISCIPLINE: We anticipate filling 3 of the 14 available positions (21%) in the anthropological sciences and 30% of the finalists identified anthropology as their main area of study. About 36% or 4-6 positions are reserved for projects in the geological sciences and geology / mineral science / paleobiology applicants make up 34% of the finalist pool. The majority of positions, 43%, or 5-7 slots, will be filled in the biological sciences and 18, or 36% of the finalist identified the biological sciences as their main focus.
UNIVERSITY ATTENDING: The finalist set includes students from 42 different colleges and university.
ADVISOR: Students nominated for a position in the '03 RTP will be matched with the most appropriate, and available, research advisor. However, students in the finalist set have selected 29 different potential advisors as their top choice for placement.
ETHNICITY: There are 11 finalists who self identified through an optional questionnaire that they consider themselves an ethnic minority. Of these, 9 are US undergraduate students representing an ethnicity under-represented in the sciences.
