NMNH RotundaThe on-site poster session was held Thursday, 1 August 2002 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History Third Floor Rotunda (balcony above the elephant). For a live view from the rotunda, click HERE.

The virtual posters provide a glimpse into the research activities of the 27 students and teachers of the RTP Class of '02. To learn more about the Research Training Program, and especially the RTP Class of '02, visit some of our other web sites:

A total of 27 students and teachers, including 4 international students representing Brazil (2), Ecuador, and Trinidad joined the Class of '02. The group includes 20 undergraduate students, selected from an international applicant pool of more than 200 seeking to earn the opportunity to be included in the research activities of Smithsonian scientists. These 20 students have spent the past ten-weeks (25 May 2002 - 3 August 2002) engaged in exploration behind-the-scenes and in pursuit of solutions to research topics in the natural history sciences, utilizing the vast collections and resouces at the Museum. In addition, 7 middle and high school teachers from the DC area were selected to also join the '02 program for the last five-weeks, also conducting a research topic and joining in Museum activities so as to bring real life examples of science and mathematics back to their classrooms.

The '02 session of the Research Training Program was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation Research Expereinces for Undergraduates Program (Award: DBI-9820303), the Smithsonian Women's Committee, the Alice Eve Kennington Endowment, the Bill and Jean Lane Endowment, and the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Teachers (Award: EEC-973148, Supplement #11).

We gratefully acknowledge their on-going support in providing opportunities for undergraduate students and teachers to engage in research activities with Smithsonian scientists.
