Research Training Program
FINALIST LIST
2002

A total of 193 applications were received for review and 131 selected as semi-finalists. Seventeen (17) members from the NMNH scientific staff evaluated the semi-finalist applications. There were eight review teams. Each application was reviewed and scored by two different members from the NMNH community. The top 40 scoring applicants were compared using a normalization process and some adjustments made. The entire applicant pool was available on-line to all potential research advisors for review and comment 13 - 14 February 2002. These comments were carefully considered, another normalization conducted, and the 50 finalists announced 15 February 2002.

Finalists will be evaluated and scored by a panel of six (6) members from the NMNH scientific community serving as selection judges. Judges will complete a 100 point score sheet for all finalist applications. Following scoring, the Judges will convene to discuss the final ranking, nominate 20 student for participation in the '02 RTP, and suggest the best in-residence NMNH research advisor for each student nominated for a position in the summer program.

Statistics: The finalist list includes 64%. The majority of finalists are in their Junior year (34%) and most applicants (52%) express an interest in the Biological Sciences, specifically Vertebrate Zoology, followed by . the Geological Sciences including Paleobiology and Mineral Sciences (26%) and then the Anthropological Sciences (22%).

IMPORTANT: This posting of finalist status is not definitive. Due to regular adjustments in review sets, circumstances often dictate a change in status. No applicant should consider themselves completely eliminated from consideration for a position in the RTP until the final status is released and award notices are mailed - 8 March 2002.
