Program
Summary A total of 266 applications were received by the 2000 deadline of 1 February 2000. The Pre-screening Committee met Thursday, 3 February 2000. All application folders were reviewed, including incomplete folders. The committee nominated 178 semi-finalists (67%) for forwarding to Scientific Evaluators serving on the Scoring Committee The Scoring Committee was composed of fourteen (14) members from the NMNH scientific staff. There were seven review teams with two reviewers per team. Semi-finalists folders were divided randomly into seven review set of 25 or 26 folders per set. Review sets were distributed to Evaluators Friday, 4 February 2000. Each semi-finalist was scored by two different reviewers. Evaluators completed a 100 point score sheet for all application folders in their set. The top scoring applications were nominated as finalists. To equalize scoring, review sets were normalized. There are 57 finalists. The Final Selection Committee is composed of seven (7) members from the NMNH scientific community serving as Judges representing each of the seven natural history research departments (Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Invertebrate Zoology, Geology/Mineral Sciences, Paleobiology, and Vertebrate Zoology). Each Judge will review and score all finalists. A 100 point score sheet will be used to rank applications. Scores will be normalized to equalize ranking. The Judges will nominate 20 student/mentor teams for participation in the 2000 summer session plus at least 6 alternates. IMPORTANT: This posting finalist status is not definitive. Due to regular adjustments in review sets, circumstances often dictate a change in status. No applicant should consider themselves completely eliminated from consideration for a position in the RTP until the final status is released and award notices are mailed - 8 March 2000.
