Differentiating characters and geographic distribution of Bulia deducta and Bulia similaris (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) The genus Bulia belongs in the subfamily Catocalinae. This genus currently consists of seven closely related species, all of which exhibit a great degree of interspecific variation and were almost impossible to differentiate from one another by external characters. The purpose of this project was to look for external characters that would facilitate the identification of the two species, Bulia deducta and Bulia similaris, and to record their geographic distribution. No distinguishing characters were found in their wing pattern and coloration. To separate Bulia deducta from Bulia similaris genitalia characters of both sexes were used. By brushing the genital area of both sexes to remove covering scales, characters of the genitalia were revealed that could be used for identification. While examining the type specimens of other species of Bulia, it was determined that Bulia morelosa was a synonym of Bulia similaris. During this investigation female specimens from Monterrey, Mexico appeared to be different from other species of Bulia. As a result a revision and phylogenetic analysis of Bulia will be conducted.
