A total of 341 applications were received by the 1998 deadline of 1 February 1998. An additional 23 applications were received after the deadline but in time for evaluation by the Pre-screening Committee before review sets were established and folders forwarded to the Scoring Committee. Generally late applications can not be accepted. However, due to computer problems experienced on the deadline, late application materials were considered.

The Pre-screening Committee eliminated 109 applicants (30%) and nominated 255 semi-finalists (70%) for forwarding to the Scoring Committee.

The 1998 Scoring Committee is composed of sixteen members from the NMNH scientific staff. There are eight review teams with two reviewers per team. Application folders have been divided randomly into eight review set of 31 or 32 folders per set. Each semi-finalist will be scored by two different reviewers. Scoring Committee members will complete a 100 point score sheet for all application folders in their set. To equalize scoring, review sets will be computer normalized to achieve an average score of 75 and standard deviation of 10. Approximately six folders from each review set will be nominated for review by the Final Selection Committee.

IMPORTANT: This posting of semi-finalist status is not definitive. Due to regular adjustments in review sets, circumstances often dictate a change in status. No applicant should consider themselves completely eliminated from consideration for a position in the RTP until the final status is released and award notices are mailed - 8 March 1998.
