PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Through our General Internship Program, Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) provides a variety of opportunities for students to contribute their time and energy toward the endeavors of the Museum. Each year more than 500 students engage in internships at NMNH with appointments varying from one week to one year. Project focus and intensity varies greatly. Positions range from short-term, part-time appointments to full-time year-long commitments.

Unless otherwise noted, no financial assistance, housing, or travel are provided.

The best way to secure an internship through the NMNH General Internship Program is to contact the project sponsor directly.

Students interested in placement through the general internship program are encouraged to contact the project sponsor directly using the contact information (phone and e-mail) provided in the project listing to discuss details, availability, and potential placement. There is no formal application form to complete.

PROGRAM TITLE: Winter Break Program - 2011

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Winter Break Program provides a short-term opportunity for those students located in the DC area during the winter break (generally January) to spend time at the Museum contributing to the on-going activities of the NMNH community. Project focus and intensity varies greatly. Participants are expected to be in-residence at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC during their participation in the program.

No financial assistance, housing, or travel are provided as part of the program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Alternative Spring Break Program provides opportunities for college undergraduate and graduate students to spend their spring break at the Museum contributing to the on-going activities of the NMNH community. Project focus and intensity varies greatly. Participants are expected to be in-residence at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC during their participation in the program.

PROGRAM TITLE: Professionals & Families Spring Break Program - 2012

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Professionals & Families Spring Break Program provides and opportunity for professionals and families to participate in on-going activities and endeavors of the NMNH community for a week during spring break. Participants must commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week, during regular work hours, standard work days. Project focus and intensity varies greatly. Participants are expected to be in-residence at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC during their participation in the program.

PROGRAM TITLE: Natural History Research Experiences

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Funded by the National Science Foundation REU program, the Natural History Research Experience (NHRE) summer internship program pairs undergraduate students with members of the Natural History research, collections, and education staff, providing a hands-on introduction to scientific research. Here is an opportunity for students to engage in an original research project with a scientific mentor from one or more of the NMNH scholarly disciplines: Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Invertebrate Zoology, Mineral Science, Paleobiology, Vertebrate Zoology, and Museum Education. Additional activities include behind-the-scenes events and tours at the museum. The program traditionally begins the Tuesday after Memorial Day and concludes ten weeks later. Students selected will receive a stipend of $5,000 and housing at a local university. A relocation allowance may also be requested. Previous research experience is not required. Applications from ethnic minorities and members of other underrepresented groups are welcomed. Upcoming session tenure: 29 May 2012 to 3 August 2012.

Scanned or electronic copies of college transcripts are acceptable. Applicants will receive notification of status the first week of April.

PROGRAM TITLE: Youth Engagement through Science (YES!)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Youth Engagement though Science (YES!) program engages 15-25 rising high school sophomores and juniors from the Washington DC area in exciting internships at the National Museum of Natural History. During 6 weeks in the summer, interns work on meaningful research projects and venture behind-the-scenes into the Museum’s vast research collections. Participants acquired valuable technological skills and enhanced their written and verbal communication skills through guided workshops. At the end of the summer session, YES! interns are challenged to create educational activities for museum visitors, combining their research and science education skills. In the fall, participants continue with their educational and career development by participating in college preparatory activities.

PROGRAM TITLE: National Anthropological Archives

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The National Anthropological Archives (NAA) collects and preserves historical and contemporary anthropological materials that document the world's cultures and the history of anthropology. The NAA offers paid and unpaid internships for graduate and undergraduate students interested in exploring a career in archives or anthropology. Intern projects are carried out under the direct supervision of a professional anthropologist, archivist or imaging specialist. Available projects include arrangement, description, and preservation of archival collections, reference services, and digital imaging. Projects may vary depending on the background, experience, and interest of the student.

PROGRAM TITLE: Human Studies Film Archives

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Like its sister archives, the National Anthropological Archives, the Human Studies Film Archives collects and preserve historical and contemporary media materials, including moving images, still photographs and audio, that document the world's cultures and the history of ethnographic filmmaking. The HSFA offers paid and unpaid internships for graduate and undergraduate students interested in exploring a career in moving image archives, anthropology or documentary film history. Intern projects are carried out under the direct supervision of a professional archivist. Available projects include processing and description of media collections. Projects may vary depending on the background, experience, and interest of the student.

PROGRAM TITLE: Arctic Studies Center in Anchorage (Alaska) Internship Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: At the Arctic Studies Center office in Anchorage, Alaska, Native people, scholars and museum associates work together on a broad range of collaborative research, education and public programs. Openings for volunteers and/or interns are available to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates.

The application deadline is rolling, with no set notification dates or appointment sessions. There is no formal review cycle. Students are placed in internship appointments throughout the year. Students selected for a position will be contacted directly.

PROGRAM TITLE: Smithsonian Marine Station at Ft. Pierce (Florida) Internship Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Smithsonian Marine Station (SMS ) in Fort Pierce, Florida is a research center specializing in marine biodiversity and ecosystems of Florida. Research focuses on the Indian River Lagoon and the offshore waters of Florida's east central coast, with comparative studies throughout coastal Florida. Internship and volunteer opportunities are available to students seeking to contribute their time and energy toward the activities of the Station. Internship appointments vary from one month to one year. Project focus and intensity varies greatly. Positions range from short-term, part-time appointments to full-time year-long commitments. Students are stationed in-residence at the Marine Station in Fort Pierce, Florida.

PROGRAM TITLE: Smithsonian James E. Webb Intership Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Smithsonian Institution's Office of Research and Training Services offers internships to increase participation of U.S. minority groups who are underrepresented in Smithsonian scholarly programs, in the disciplines of research conducted at the Institution, and in the museum field. This program was established in honor of the late James. E. Webb, Regent Emeritus and former Administrator of the National Air and Space Administration (NASA), to promote excellence in the management of not-for-profit organizations. The Smithsonian James E. Webb Intership Program for Minority Undergraduate Seniors and Graduate Students in Business and Public Administration sponsors internships in residence at the Smithsonian to minority senior undergraduate and graduate students in Business and Public Administration. This program is designed to promote excellence and diversity in the management of not-for-profit scientific and cultural institutions. Appointments are for a period of ten weeks. Through this program interns are placed throughout the Smithsonian, including at NMNH.

PAID APPOINTMENT. Selectees are provided a stipend and a travel allowance may be provided.

PROGRAM TITLE: Smithsonian Minority Internship Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Smithsonian Institution's Office of Research and Training Services offers internships to increase participation of U.S. minority groups who are underrepresented in Smithsonian scholarly programs, in the disciplines of research conducted at the Institution, and in the museum field. The Minority Internship Program is designed to provide undergraduate and beginning graduate students the opportunity to learn more about the Smithsonian and the students academic fields through direct experience in research or museum-related internship projects under the supervision of research and professional staff members at the Institution's many museums, research institutes and offices. Internships are full-time (40 hours per week), ten week appointments during the summer, fall, or spring. Through this program interns are placed throughout the Smithsonian, including at NMNH.

PAID APPOINTMENT. Selectees are provided a stipend with additional travel allowances offered in some cases.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should be currently engaged in undergraduate or graduate study, with an overall G.P.A. of 3.0 or its equivalent. The relevance of an internship at the Smithsonian to the student's academic and career goals will be an important part of the evaluation of an applicant. Most successful candidates are students of the disciplines in which the Smithsonian conducts research.

PROGRAM TITLE: Smithsonian Native American Internship Awards Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Smithsonian Institution's Office of Research and Training Services offers internships to increase participation of U.S. minority groups who are underrepresented in Smithsonian scholarly programs, in the disciplines of research conducted at the Institution, and in the museum field. The Smithsonian Native American Internship Awards Program sponsors internships in-residence at the Smithsonian to undergraduate and graduate Native American students who are formally or informally related to a Native American community, to participate in research or museum activities related to Native American studies for periods of 10 weeks. Appointments are spent in residence at the Institution's facilities under the supervision of Smithsonian research and professional staff members. Through this program interns are placed throughout the Smithsonian, including at NMNH.

PAID APPOINTMENT. Selectees are provided a stipend, with additional travel allowances offered in some cases.

PROGRAM TITLE: Smithsonian Affiliations Intern Partnership Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program brings students from communities where Smithsonian Affiliate institutions are located to the Smithsonian for professional development and internship experiences. The Smithsonian Affiliations Intern Partnership Program is designed for students sponsored and pre-approved by an Affiliate institution. The goal of the program is to promote professional growth and development while mutually benefiting the intern, the Smithsonian, and the Affiliate. Drawing upon the vast resources of the Smithsonian, interns gain practical experience and skills in the museum field and develop lifelong professional networks. The program is open to college and graduate students whose academic backgrounds and career aspirations lie in the museum field. Interns spend ten weeks during the summer working full-time (40 hours per week) at the Smithsonian on a project designed to assist with an Affiliate's own endeavors. A variety of lectures, behind-the-scenes tours, and social gatherings complement the interns' stay. Following their time at the Smithsonian, interns return to the Affiliate organizations in their own local communities to assist Affiliate staff part-time (12 to 15 hours per week) for up to four months, typically during a fall academic term. Through this program interns are placed throughout the Smithsonian, including at NMNH.

PROGRAM TITLE: Katzenberger Foundation Art History Internship Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Katzenberger Foundation Art History Internship Program is a pan-institutional paid internship program for undergraduate art history major juniors and seniors focusing on art history research and collections to engage in related projects at the Smithsonian. This program is generously funded by the Katzenberger Foundation. Students selected to participate in the program are provided a stipend.

QUALIFICATIONS:

    • must maintain a 3.5 or above GPA in their major
    • must be Art history majors (or a related discipline)
    • must submit an application package that includes: application, essay, 2 letters of reference, resume, and transcript of courses and grades
    • must be undergraduate juniors, seniors, or just graduated seniors
    • must be U.S. citizens

PAID APPOINTMENT. Selectees are provided a stipend.
