Intern Statistics for FY '09

Although most of our reporting is based on calendar year, the Museum also follows a fiscal year (FY '09: 1 Oct 08 to 30 Sep 09) for annual reporting.

In FY '09 there were a total of 389 internship appointments administered by the National Museum of Natural History. For comparison:

FY '08 NMNH administered 281 internship appointments
FY '07 NMNH administered 239 internship appointments
FY '06 NMNH administered 197 internship appointments
FY '05 NMNH administered 152 internship appointments

Thus, FY '09 counts show a 38% increase from FY '08 and 156% increase from FY 05.

The FY 09 count of 389 includes 7 individuals who declined or didn't successfully complete their internship and 2 who didn't show up to complete registration.

During FY 09 interns contributed 125,186 hours. This represents an increase of 34,896 hours from FY 08 and more than doubles those from FY '06. For comparison:

FY' 08 contributed hours: 90,290
FY '07 contributed hours: 77,322
FY '06 contributed hours: 58,092

In FY '09 the average number of contributed hours per intern was 322 hours which is almost exactly the same as FY '08 (321) and FY '07 (324 hours).

There were 328 new internship appointments started (registered) during FY '09, compared to 250 new internship appointments started (registered) during FY '08. In FY '09 the Smithsonian, SCEMS office registered a total of 1,293 interns Institution-wide.

Reporting for calendar year (1 Jan 09 to 31 Dec 09) shows a total of 438 internships (41 processed for appointments to begin in the next year, 334 completed, 49 carry over and 14 declined) with an additional internship 46 appointments recorded at NMNH from 1 Oct 09 to 31 Dec 09. Thus, a grand total of 474.

There were 36 appointments that carried over fiscal year FY 08 to FY 09 but closed in calendar year 2008. There were 49 internships that carried over from calendar year 2009 to calendar year 2010.
