In 2007 a total of 98 fellowship appointments were recorded by the National Museum of Natural History, including 1 whose registered fellowship was terminated, not successfully completed or declined.

Following is the 2007 list of Smithsonian fellows, research students and scholars included in Natural History's graduate community. The list also includes those awarded a Smithsonian Fellowship this year, although the appointment may not begin until next year. In 2007 the fellows community included 151 fellows, graduate and post graduates including (41) fellows, (44) visiting students and scholars, (11) external fellows as well as those with an academic appointment at Research Student (55).

Fellows include graduate students as well as pre- and postdoctoral; senior and community scholars selected for an academic appointment at Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Some fellows are in-residence full time while others are mainly off-site, but working under the guidance of an NMNH scientist and visiting the Museum.

The term "Smithsonian Fellow" is used only for those individuals awarded a Smithsonian fellowship. The term Visiting Student is used for predoctoral level students funded through other grants and the term Visiting Scientist/Visiting Scholar designates postdoctoral level researchers. Students and scholars in-residence at NMNH but whose funding is from an external source are called External Fellow.

The title of Research Student is an academic appointment awarded by the NMNH. This appointment type encompasses those individuals who are actively pursuing their education at a college or university but have not yet achieved professional status. The formal designation "Student" acknowledges active collaboration between an individual and NMNH staff. Research Students can be undergraduate or graduate level students.

This list includes name and affiliated institution during their appointment, the title of their fellowship research, the name of the supervisor/sponsoring NMNH staff, the assigned NMNH unit/office in which the research is being conducted, and the dates of the appointment.
