Research Training Program

Financial Support & Credits

Quick Links

Welcome to Natural History's on-line internship application process. Here is information about financial support and credits provided to students selected for participation in the Research Training Program.

AWARD PACKAGE

Although subject to change, the Research Training Program award package typically provided to all students selected for a position in the summer session includes: housing, stipend, transportation allowance, and research support budget.

HOUSING

A housing allowance is provided to those students selected for participation in the summer session of the Research Training Program. We recommend double efficiency apartments. Efficiency apartment style rooms have a private bathroom and a full kitchen. There is not a separate bedroom in an efficiency style apartment.

Compensation for students who do not select Smithsonian housing allowance is not available.

STIPEND

A modest stipend, approximately $3,000, is provided to cover standard per diem items such as food, laundry and commuting. This amount has proven adequate to cover all costs incurred during a ten-week appointment.

All RTP participants are responsible for daily commuting costs to and from the Smithsonian. Although there is free outdoor parking available at the apartment complex, there is no parking available at the NMNH.

TRANSPORTATION

An allowance is provided to help defray the cost of travel to/from Washington, DC. The transportation allowance is based on the distance traveled with a typical award of $500.

Students selected for participation in the RTP may elect Smithsonian provided travel arrangements or make their own arrangements to/from Washington, DC.

Washington is served by three major airports - Ronald Reagan National Airport (most convenient for domestic travelers), Dulles International, and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI).

For all kinds of metro DC airport information, visitors can go to www.metwashairports.com

Weather in DC

Getting around / Metro:
For all Metro (subway and bus) information, call 202/637-7000 from 6 am- 11:30 pm or review information at the Metro website: www.wmata.com for updates.

Transportation allowance reimbursements will generally be provided the first week of the program according to the amount awarded.

No financial assistance, including transportation allowance, is available prior to the start of the program.

RESEARCH SUPPORT

To support the research topic and enhance the opportunities available to the participants, each student/mentor team will submit a research support proposal with budget the first week the program is in session, maximum budget not to exceed $1,000 per student/advisor team.

The Smithsonian, and research advisors, generally provide the necessary facilities and supplies to conduct the research topic. However, additional items or special circumstances may necessitate the need for research funding.

Each student/mentor team will submit a proposal the first week of the program to define the research project, to establish a timetable for completion of the project goals, AND to request this supply budget that identifies and justifies the additional items and opportunities necessary to complete the research topic.

All official notification of financial award and payment schedule will be sent directly to selected students from the Smithsonian's Office of Research and Training Services. This information is not available from the Research Training Program office or in advance of selection/acceptance.

NOTE: The Research Training Program is supported by annual grants received from sources from within and outside the Smithsonian. Student financial support is contingent on receipt of these grants. The variable amount of these grants determines the yearly award base to program participants. The items and amounts mentioned here are part of the RTP recommended award package and are subject to change based on actual grants received.

CREDITS

The Smithsonian Institution is not a degree granting organization and can not award academic credit. However, program participants may arrange for University credit through their home institution. The Smithsonian will not pay direct costs or tuition for credits earned.
