Important
2007 Information
The
RTP Advisory Panel has released the annual goals
for the upcoming session. In 2007 we will be
de-emphasizing the research aspect of the program,
including reduced curriculum focus on preparing
participants for research careers in the natural
history sciences. Instead, the 2007 program
will focus on providing a general natural history
overview. Following is the new Research Training
Program summary and goals.
The
2007 Research Training Program is a ten-week,
museum-based, in-residence summer program exclusively
for currently enrolled, English proficient,
college-level undergraduate students interested
in learning more about the biological, geological
or anthropological sciences. Through a competitive
review process 15 outstanding students from
around the world will be selected to participate.
Students will partner with a Smithsonian scientist
to investigate a natural history project as
well as participate in a series of lectures,
workshops, demonstrations, behind-the-scenes
tours, and field trips that focus on exploring
natural history. Students, in collaboration
with their Smithsonian advisor, will conduct
a project and communicate the results through
an in-house poster presentation. Projects will
be conducted in-residence at the Smithsonian's
National Museum of Natural History in Washington,
DC utilizing the vast research facilities and
collection of the Museum including 127 million
natural history specimens.
-
Of the 15 students anticipated to join the 2007
session of the Research Training Program, we
seek to host 2 students from underrepresented
groups and to support sending 3 students to
professional meetings.
-
Our projects will focus on providing students
an opportunity to actively engage in our professional
community, with 4 of these projects suitable
for scientific publication and/or presentation
to professional audiences.
-
Our curriculum activities and events will focus
on providing students a general overview of
the natural history sciences.
