Funding to support the Research Training Program is provided predominantly by grants awarded from within, and outside, the Institution but also donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Approximately 70% of RTP support comes from external sources and about 30% from within the Smithsonian including various offices, units, and granting organizations.
