AMP Scholar Andrea Coleman (New Mexico AMP) and Mentor Dr. Dave Pawson.

Andrea Coleman is a Freshman at New Mexico State University majoring in Marine Biology.  She worked in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology with Marine Biologist and Currator of Echinoderms Dr. Dave Pawson.  For her research Andrea conducted a survey of sea cucumbers to determine which species contain the sticky threads called "covarian tubules."  These threads are of interest to the US Navy as a source for underwater adhesives and to cancer researchers because the threads contain "holotherin," which laboratory tests have shown can shrink tumors.
