Some helpful information to aid travel to and from the '01 Winter Workshop - - Scientific Partners: Joining the Smithsonian Community including transportation, hotel information, meals, registration, and payment.

TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

All flights and travel reservations were booked by the Smithsonian Travel Services Office upon confirmation of participation by attendees.

Air Transportation:  Travel utilized electronic ticketing with confirmation itinerary e-mail to workshop attendees.  All flight arrived at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

Train Transportation:  Trains arrived at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Bus Transportation:  Buses arrived at Union Station in Washington, D.C.



TRAVEL FROM REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT TO HOTEL HARRINGTON:

By Metro:  The hotel is located two blocks south of the Metro Center stop on the red line, and is most directly reached via metrorail.  The yellow line of the metrorail is accessible from Reagan National Airport on the lower level.  Metro Center can be reached by traveling north on the yellow line (toward Mt. Vernon Square – UDC), changing to the red line at the Gallery Place – Chinatown transfer point (6 stops), and traveling west (toward Shady Grove) to Metro Center (1 stop).  When exiting Metro Center on the 11th Street side, Hotel Harrington can be seen on the corner of 11th and E Streets.  A one-way ticket on the metrorail typically runs between $1.60 and $2.00 (depending on the distance traveled). 

By Taxi:  A taxicab from Reagan National Airport to Hotel Harrington runs between $12 and $15.  


TRAVEL FROM UNION STATION TO HOTEL HARRINGTON:

By Metro:  The hotel is located two blocks south of the Metro Center stop on the red line, and is most directly reached via metrorail.  The red line of the metrorail is immediately accessible from Union Station.  Metro Center can be reached by traveling west on the red line (toward Shady Grove) for three stops from Union Station.  A one-way ticket on the metrorail typically runs between $1.60 and $2.00 (depending on the distance traveled).
 


TRAVEL BY CAR TO HOTEL HARRINGTON: 

From North (I-95) New York – New Jersey Turnpike:  Follow I-95 South to the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel.  After exiting the tunnel, travel about 1 ½ miles to Baltimore/Washington Parkway.  Follow the Parkway south to 50 West.  Remain on 50 West (it will become New York Avenue) and continue until 5th Street. N.W. Turn left onto 5th Street.  Go to E Street N.W. and turn right.  Follow E Street, the hotel is at the corner of 11th & E Streets. 

From South (I-95) Richmond, VA:  Take I-95 North to I-395 (I-95 becomes I-395 inside the Capital Beltway).  Follow I-395 to a split at Rout 1 (US) and I-395.  Take US 1 North across the 14th Street Bridge (US 1 becomes 14th Street after the bridge).  Follow 14th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue and turn right.  Go to 13th Street N.W. and turn left.  Go one block to E Street and turn right.  Two blocks down, turn right on 11th Street, the hotel is at the corner of 11th & E Streets. 

From West (I-66):  Take I-66 East, follow the signs for Washington, D.C.  At the Roosevelt Bridge, follow the signs for Constitution Avenue.  Follow Constitution to 15th Street N.W. and turn left.  Go to Pennsylvania Avenue and turn right.  Continue until 13th Street and turn left.  After one block, turn right onto E Street N.W.  Two blocks down, turn right on 11th Street, the hotel is at the corner of 11th & E Streets. 

From Northwest Maryland (I-70):  Take I-270 South, at the division follow the signs to Virginia (I-495/Capital Beltway).  Take the immediate right-hand exit (exit 14) right after the American Legion Bridge onto the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  Follow the parkway to the Roosevelt Bridge.  Follow the signs to Constitution Avenue.  Turn left on 15th Street N.W.  Go to Pennsylvania Avenue and turn right.  Continue until 13th Street and turn left.  After one block, turn right onto E Street N.W.  Two blocks down, turn right on 11th Street, the hotel is at the corner of 11th & E Streets. 
 


HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS: 

Accommodations for attendees was provided by the Hotel Harrington, located three blocks from the Natural History Building and withing walking distance of many District attractions including the White House and the National Mall.  All rooms were furnished with a direct dial telephone and free cable TV.  The hotel facilities include a laundromat, a burger stand, and a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday.  Student participants were housed in four-person occupancy rooms; coordinators could choose single or double rooms, however, single rooms were limited and were offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

WORKSHOP LOCATION:

All activities of the LSAMP at the Smithsonian '01 Winter Workshop took place at the Smithsonian's Natural History Building (NHB), located on the Mall between the U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW.  The Executive Conference Room (ECR) in the NHB served as the event headquarters and information center.  The ECR is located on the First Floor of the building directly above the Constitution Avenue Lobby.



MEALS:

Meals were not provided as part of the workshop.  The Smithsonian’s Natural History Building offers a varied selection of pastas, salads, and grilled specialties at the Atrium Café, located just inside the Constitution Avenue entrance.  There are also several food courts and restaurants in the area surrounding the museum and the Hotel Harrington: The Shops (13th & F Streets), The Pavilion (12th St. & Pennsylvania Avenue), TGI Friday’s (12th & Pennsylvania Avenue), and numerous other cafes and delis.  



ON-LINE REGISTRATION

The LSAMP at the Smithsonian '01 Winter Workshop offered quick and convenient on-line application through our web site.  Applicants could simply follow the Application Procedures section to submit all the necessary materials to qualify for consideration as a participant in the workshop. Participants needed only about 20 minutes to complete the basic on-line application and received immediate confirmation of receipt of your application documents. 


PAYMENT:

All attendees to the LSAMP at the Smithsonian ’01 Winter Workshop received a per diem at the rate of $60 per day for 6 days (total $360).
