Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The National Science Foundation has been supporting the research of the Research Training Program student participants since 1992. A total of 183 students have been supported through 5 separate REU awards, including 107 women and 39 minorities: 12 African Americans, 19 Hispanic Americans, 6 Native Americans, and 2 Native Hawaiians.

A total of 176 scientific works have resulted from student collaborations including 118 publications, 53 presentations, and 5 papers are in preparation. At least 88 students have gone on to graduate school including 26 Masters Degree and 62 Ph.D.

Grant DBI-0243512 (two year probationary award, 2003 and 2004) supported 21 students from 2003 to 2004, including 15 women and 12 minorities: 7 Latin Americans, 1 Native American, 3 African Americans, and 1 Native Hawaiian.

Grant DBI-9531331 (three year award, 1996, 1997, and 1998) supported 49 students from 1996 to 1998, including 25 women and 7 minorities: 2 Latin Americans, 1 Native American, and 4 African Americans.

In 1998, the RTP also receieved Grant EAR-9732416 for Mineral Sciences and Paleobiology Interns. This grant supported 5 interns including 3 women.
