Located
across the hall from the staff cafeteria
and directly down the hallway from the
Constitution Avenue Lobby, the
Academic
Resources Center - ARC - is a community
center reserved especially for in-residence
students and professionals serving academic
appointments at NMNH. Featuring 1600 square
feet of space, hosting groups of 40 or
more are no problem. There are seven common
use computer work stations and a large
conference table with powerpoint projector
for formal meetings or regular informal
lunch gatherings. The space is complete
with information bulletin boards, housing
exchange center, newsletter postings,
research posters featuring student projects,
microwave, refrigerator, computers, telephones,
photocopier, color printer and scanner
and several couches for relaxing. Guests
are encouraged to gather in the space
to utilize the resources and socialize
with each other.
Don't
forget to join the group: The Systematic
Discussion Group meets in the ARC
every Tuesday from noon to 1:00 p.m. to
discuss current papers in systematic biology.
ARC
Hours
During
the peek summer months (June and July)
the room is open Monday - Friday from
7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and most weekends.
During the non-summer months the room
is generally open from 7:00 a.m. to
5:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and closed
on weekends. However, special access
can be granted by prior arrangement.
ARC
Policies and Procedures:
1.
Report Problems: The room is
checked regularly, but to aid our maintenance
of equipment and supply stock please
report problems to ARC staff as soon
as possible.
2.
Keep it Clean: Users of the facility
are expected to maintain the space,
including keeping it clean and returning
items to their location.
3.
Intoxicating beverages and narcotics
prohibited: In accordance with Smithsonian
policies for Federal spaces, consumption
and/or storage of intoxicating beverages
on the premises is prohibited.

Resources Available:
Computers:
Seven PC computers with Internet connection
and Microsoft software are available
for use.
Telephones:
Five telephones are available for local
calls. Calls are automatically recorded
and monitored.
Photocopier:
A photocopier is available for black
and white copies.
Bulletin
Boards: Several "theme"
boards are maintained in the space including
a location for posting recent scientific
articles by NMNH staff, local seminars
and academic events, and other research
opportunities.
