Application Information & Links
The
best way to secure an internship through the NMNH
General Internship Program is to contact the staff
sponsor directly to discuss the project details
and your availability.

The
following documents, references, and forms may
be used to apply for all NMNH internship programs,
except the Research
Training Program (RTP) - RTP
application forms.
Note
that many projects do NOT require formal submission
of application documents. Often student selection
for placement in the General NMNH Internship Program
is through a personal, over-the-phone, or e-mail
interview in place of a formal review of submitted
application documents.
Once
you've decided on the internship
program you're most interested in, and the
staff you most want to work with, discuss with
them their application requirements.
Unlike
many other Smithsonian internships, we generally
do NOT require an "essay" submission.
Following
are links to our standard application documents
and forms. Unfortunately,
our on-line, web-based form submission remains
indefinitely out-of-service. We apologize for
the inconvenience! In place of direct and dynamic
on-line submission, please use the following options.
These forms can NOT be submitted directly on-line.
Information can be completed on-line but to save
your work you will need to print or copy/paste
into a word processing file or other format and
then submit separately.

Cover
Letter Form
-
here you have the option to also include and/or
substitute your resume or CV. A
cover letter provides an opportunity for applicants
to define their interest in participating in the
internship, include pertinent information not
requested in the application form, and offer insight
into their background and interests. The cover
letter must be prepared in English by you and
be an accurate reflection of your written communication
skills.

-
project sponsors sometimes request two professional
letters of recommendation, submitted via e-mail
attachment by your references.
Internship Project List
- here you will find a listing staff actively
seeking interns for particular projects. Other
members from the NMNH community may also be
interested in hosting an intern but do not have
a particular project listed.

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINES
Students
are placed in internship appointments at Natural
History throughout the year. Although individual
programs have firm application deadlines, for
general internships, application materials
are accepted throughout the year. There are
no set notification dates or start/end schedules.
You will be contacted directly if a staff member
is interested in hosting you as their intern.
To
facilitate placement of students seeking non-summer
internships, each year a Spring
and Fall
Internship Fair is held at Natural
History.
Unlike the career events held at many colleges
and universities that feature students visiting
recruitment booths, the NMNH Internship Fair is
conducted on-site with staff stopping by the ARC
to review documents submitted. During the fair
all application documents received from students
seeking placement are made available to interested
NMNH staff. Staff review the documents from applicants
and select candidates they are interested in working
with and then contact students directly to discuss
internship possibilities.
