quick reference, here's an alphabetical
link to all Fishes research staff:
REFERENCE
Each
project advisor entry includes the following
information:
| Advisor
Name |
Telephone
number
|
E-mail
address
|
Position
title. Education history. Brief description
of current research specialties.
Where
appropriate, entries also include a sample RTP
research project description, the number and
name(s) of prior RTP participants hosted by
the advisor, and the publication(s) co-authored
by the RTP student/advisor team.
If
known, the annual availability is listed.
Curator
of Fishes. B.S. (1981) James Madison University;
M.S. (1986) College of Charleston; Ph.D. (1992)
College of William and Mary. Research specialties:
systematics, phylogeny, morphology, early life
history, and biogeography of tropical marine
and deep-sea fishes; Galapagos.
Science Unit: Department
of Vertebrate Zoology, Division
of Fishes.
Sample
project: The
student will assist in identifying and describing
larvae of coral-reef fishes from the museum's
research station at Carrie Bow Cay, Belize,
Central America. Work will involve editing digital
images of the larvae, describing morphology
and color patterns for scientific publication,
taking microscopic counts and measurements,
and possibly participating in molecular analyses
of larval and adult tissue samples. This work
is part of a broader study of diversity of Atlantic
and eastern Pacific shorefishes and the utility
of unique color patterns in larvae as a source
of systematic/phylogenetic information.
