Wm. Leo Smith (1997): "I am now in the doctoral program at Columbia University through the American Museum of Natural History. I received one of the AMNH graduate research fellowships and I am working with Melanie Stiassny on fish systematics. I think that Dave Johnson is going to be one of my committee members up here after I get more into the project, so I will at least keep that connection going." Jason Grant (1998). To honor his research advisor Jason orchestrated the publication FLORILEGIUM LUCTATORI BOTANICO DEDICATUM: A TRIBUTE TO LYMAN B. SMITH. The current issue of Harvard Papers in Botany, including the tribute to Lyman B. Smith was published today, September 8, 1999. The work includes an introduction by Jason.

Dawn Freeberg (Espindola) (1988): "Get your mental databank ready, it's about to be tested because this is a message from your 1988 student intern Dawn Freeberg (Espindola)! I stumbled across the Botany Dept. tonight as I was surfing the web getting info related to our daughter's kindergarten school. So, here's a spontaneous HI! I still have visions of my advisors Chris (Tuccinardi) in a rather small room, surrounded by computers. Please tell me your not still using dBase! I actually owe quite a lot to my advisor, Chris, for you see, the time that he spent instructing me on the "finer" points of dBase (I, II or III? -gee, I forget!) launched an interest for me in database development that I have pursued in my career; first at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, CA, then as a private contractor, and currently (while I am home full time raising two beautiful children) as a volunteer at The Works (a Minneapolis science center). My "weapon of mass organization" is Filemaker Pro (my time at The Tech brought me into "Mac-land" (1990-1994)). I have even been quoted as saying "Databases are my life!". Thanks, Chris!

News-worthy events in my life since 1988 include my marriage to David Espindola (from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) - my boyfriend back then - who has been working for Oracle Corp. the last 5 years as a computer consultant/manager. His work has brought us to Joinville, Brazil (in the state of Santa Catarina) where we lived for 5 months in 1987, Bismarck, ND (close to my family) for 3 months last summer, and Lake Geneva, WI for 2 weeks this summer. When we aren't away, we are in our house here in Eden Prairie, MN (15 minutes SW of Minneapolis). Our daughter, Kayla is 5 1/2 and starts kindergarten next week - yikes! And the newest member to our family is Andre (a boy) who is now 6 months old and trying very hard to learn how to crawl. When I stop and look back on my life and career, my time spent at the Smithsonian is a true highlight that I reflect upon with pride. If you have a chance, I'd love to hear from the other interns." Maureen Shea (1992): "I wonder if you remember me at the NMNH? I was the first anthropology research trainee, working under Doug Owsley. Via snail mail, I was keeping in touch with a couple of the 1992 RTPers, but unfortunately I have lost contact with these individuals. I would especially like to reach Rebecca "Becky Robinson and Linnette Garcia-Perez, to send them wedding announcements. I am getting married on July 17, this year." To make contact, e-mail: maureen_shea@hms.harvard.edu

Sandy Saluke (1998): I've started grad school at GW this summer in the museum education program. It promises to be a really good program. I'm very excited about it. Hi to everybody!" To make contact, e-mail: svs4@cornell.edu

Four RTP alumni were awarded National Science Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowship in 1999.

  • Emily Greenfest (1997) to University of Chicago
  • Tristan Kimbrell (1998) to University of California, Davis
  • Alan Krakauer (1994) to University of California, Berkeley
  • Jonathan Lee (1996) to University of Texas, Austin

Three RTP alumni received National Science Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowship honorable mention in 1999.

  • Lisa Dorn (1993) to University of California, Davis
  • Sean Menke (1998) to University of California, Davis

Colleen McLinn (1998): "My life is going quite well. I returned from spending the semester in London last week, and on Sunday received my BS in Biology from Eckerd. I will be living in Florida for the next month, and then plan to visit northern California before returning to Minnesota. In August, I will start graduate school in the University of Minnesota's Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, and am quite excited about this step. I hope all of your lives are going well, and would love to hear from you." To make contact, e-mail: mclinncm@yahoo.com

Nathan Muchhala (1997): "I am trying to get in contact with Katherine Bash (1997). She was a fellow RTPer with me in the summer of 1997. Does anybody have her email address or any other way I could get in touch with her? Apparently she is currently in Ecuador on a Fulbright Fellowship. I actually just received a Fulbright to go to Ecuador for the 99-00 school year. I'm pretty excited - I'm going to do research with Pablo Jarrin (1997) in the cloud forests there. So I wanted to get in touch with Katherine since she'd probably have some useful advice for me. Thanks for any help anyone can provide!" To make contact, e-mail: nathan.muchhala@milliman.com

Michelle Anderson (1992): "I am now working with the Thurston Conservation District in Olympia, WA. I am having a lot of fun here. About 50% of the work is field work which is what I wanted. I am doing a lot of work with streams, wetlands and groundwater issues on agricultural lands. Salmon is the big issue here now, as Washington State is facing an ESA listing in less than a year so everyone is scrambling to "save the salmon". It's a bit of a mess. An update on my family. Michael and Audrey (my twins) will be starting school in September. Tommy is now a year and a half and has me wrapped around his finger. We bought a house just a couple of months ago in a town called Steilacoom. It's a tiny house on a decent sized lot. I'm pretty excited that it's only a couple blocks from a boat launch. I am determined to take up kyaking. The property has 2 apple trees, 2 cherry trees and 2 plum trees so if the Y2K dilema lasts through the summer, at least we won't starve during those months." To make contact, e-mail: email mca28@juno.com

Diana Thiel (1998): "I have been working, finishing my thesis, and applying to grad schools, which took a lot more time and effort than I thought. I went to look at the Univ. of Cincinnati two weekends ago and loved it. I am going to Chicago this weekend to look at U of Chicago. I'll let you know where I end up" To make contact, e-mail: dianat@UDel.Edu

Heather Kalb (1988): "I just submitted a recommendation for one of my students who is applying for the upcoming RTP. I'm still in Texas. I'm glad I was one of the first years. It was great living with George and Pat. I don't keep in touch with any of my fellow interns, but would like to hear about them, though I occasionally see Allen Wolf at conferences."
