Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

On behalf of NASA, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory operates the Astrophysics Data System (ADS), which contains an archive of the astronomy literature available from a searchable interface. The ADS contains over 3 million abstracts from journal articles, conference proceedings, reports, theses, and more, divided into databases by content (Astronomy, Space Instrumentation, Physics, Geophysics, and Preprints).  Also included in the ADS are 3 million scanned pages, covering the major astronomy journals back to volume 1, many smaller journals, as well as a significant chunk of the old observatory publication literature.  The ADS can be accessed through the World Wide Web URL: adswww.harvard.edu.

Einstein Observatory

The Einstein Observatory Data Archive consists of x-ray images obtained by the Einstein Observatory Satellite (HEAO-B). This satellite carried the first large x-ray telescope capable of focusing images of astronomical objects. The spacecraft operated from November 1978 to April 1981. Images and spectra of over 4,000 astronomical objects were obtained and are stored electronically at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). The data have been on-line for many years.  At this time they are temporarily unavailable until we have migrated this archive to more modern hardware.

Chandra X-ray Observatory

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory was launched on July 23, 1999, and carries two instruments, ACIS and HRC, providing the world with the highest spatial resolution X-ray telescope to date: about half an arcsecond.  It has generated X-ray images of numerous celestial objects with unprecedented detail. Through the use of transmission gratings Chandra is also capable of providing very high resolution spectral data.  This is an on-going mission. The SAO operates the mission under contract with NASA in its Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) which can be found on the web at: http://cxc.harvard.edu/

The Chandra Data Archive (CDA) contains almost all information and data that were generated by and in connection with this mission, including observation catalog, telemetry, processed data, final data products, and calibration data.  Observations are linked to publications in the professional literature through the ADS.  In general, observations proposed by members of the astronomical community remain proprietary for a year.  After that period the data are released to the public domain.  The CDA can be accessed through: http://cxc.harvard.edu/cda/
