The National Museum of the American Indian has two resource centers: one at the Cultural Resources Center (Suitland, Maryland), and the other at the George Gustav Heye Center (New York City). The NMAI Archives, located in Suitland, has a photographic collection of 125,000 images; 7000 film and videos; as well as a text archive that documents the museum's history and collections. The scope of the collections is expanding to include materials from Native American perspectives that will complement the already rich ethnographies and records of acquisitions. The archive's film and video collections include materials from the museum's biannual film and video festival, audio-tapes of interviews, and NMAI productions. The Suitland facility also has an excellent library collection accessible through the SIRIS website (www.siris.si.edu) that is maintained by Smithsonian Institution Libraries. The GGHC resource center has a library collection of 4000 volumes focused on Native American history and culture, as well as a video collection of 500 titles. The phone number for the GGHC resources center is 212-514-3781.

National Museum of the American Indian Photo Archives

The Photo Archives at the Museum of the American Indian has over 125,000 images comprising one of the foremost collections of images of Native American culture and history. The Archives provides reference, research, and printing services to Native Americans, publishers, scholars, museum staff, and the general public. Researchers may view the collection by appointment.

The collection includes black and white historic scenes, portraits, and field photographs of the Museum's ethnographic and archaeological expeditions in North America, Mexico, and South and Central America. There are also thousands of photographs of the Museum's collection of artifacts in color and black and white. The majority of images range in date from 1860 to 1930, but also include images of contemporary events. Formats available include lantern slides, 34mm black and white and color prints, color slides, 4X5 transparencies, and digital images of objects in the collection.
