Strong intended to study zoology in college, and his undergraduate training in ornithology is conspicuously evident in his journal entries. The journal includes 14 sketches of birds, like this "white eagle," which he shot with his .22 caliber pistol along the Wampu River (the expedition crew hunted for much of their food). Strong records the name of the bird in the Miskito language (yakal pihini) and mentions trading for ethnographic objects at a Sumu village and his excavation of a "small raised mound or house terrace" with a sketch of an obsidian blade. |
