Register to the Records of the By Kent Griffiths Revised by National Anthropological
Archives April 1998 Series Descriptions and Container Lists
The Papers of this collection are those of the American Anthropological Association. The first part of the finding aid deals specifically with those series containing the papers of Association Presidents for the years 1947-1967, excluding 1961-1965. The larger collection dates from 1917-1991. The Executive Board of the Association voted to deposit the records in the National Anthropological Archives in 1972. No records less than five years old are to be deposited, and no records less than ten years old are open for scholarly use, except by Association officers, or when otherwise stated. The American Anthropological Association gives the literary property rights to the public. History The American Anthropological Association was incorporated in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 1902 by W.J. McGee, Acting Chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology. An organizational meeting took place in Pittsburgh on June 30, 1902. A detailed account of the founding of the Association appears in the American Anthropologist, vol. 5, 1903, written by W. J. McGee who was the first President of the organization. The purpose of the American Anthropological Association is to promote the science of anthropology; to stimulate the efforts of American anthropologists; to coordinate anthropology with other sciences; to foster local and other societies devoted to anthropology; to serve as a bond of union among American anthropologists and organizations; and to publish and encourage the publication of material pertaining to anthropology. A new constitution was adopted by the Association at their annual meeting in late 1946. This brought about a reorganization in 1947. As a result, President Clyde Kluckhohn took office in May, replacing president Ruth Benedict. The constitution called for a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer to serve as the administrative officers of the association. (In 1952, the position of President-Elect replaced that of Vice-President.) Two classes of membership were established: Members and Fellows. Anyone was eligible to become a Member, but they had no voting privileges. Fellows had to meet certain requirements and were eligible to vote in the nomination and election of officers and other business. In 1948, the class of Liaison Fellow was established for persons in related fields. The Executive Council consisted of all Fellows, and, from within its membership was elected the President, Vice-President and Executive Board. It was the final authority of the Association. The Executive Board had seven members, including the President who was the chairman. The Executive Board voted on the selection of Fellows. In 1947 the establishment of an Executive Secretary to the Executive Board was made possible through a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. In 1955 the duties of this position were greatly expanded, incorporating those previously handled by the Secretary and Treasurer. In the 1950's the position was moved to Washington, D.C. to an office which was to serve as headquarters for the Association. The American Anthropological Association holds an annual meeting, usually in December, at a site determined by the Executive Board. Board members meet at least twice a year (once at the annual meeting) and otherwise conduct business by mail. Several anthropological organizations became affiliated with the American Anthropological Association. Their members automatically become members of the Association. In 1947 the Anthropological Association of Hawaii became reactivated after a period of dormancy and was approved by the Executive Board as an associate organization. Other such groups included the Central States Branch of the American Anthropological Association and the American Ethnological Society. The major publication of the Association is the American Anthropologist, which predates the founding of the organization, having been established in the late 19th century. In April of 1947, the News Bulletin was introduced. This later became the Bulletin of the American Anthropological Association in 1953, and then the Bulletin in 1968. Through 1952, the Annual Report of the American Anthropological Association appeared in American Anthropologist under "proceedings for the Year Ending...". From 1953-1958 it was published in the Bulletin of the American Anthropological Association. From 1959-1966 the report was again published in the American Anthropologist. The Annual Report was published separately starting in 1967. These papers reflect the activities of the American Anthropological Association for the years 1917-1991 (excluding 1961-1965 in the "Presidential Papers" ). The major portion of the collection consists of correspondence and memorandums, both originals and carbon copies, typed and handwritten. Also included are telegrams, postcards, notes, lists, reports, newspaper clippings, small publications, ballots, receipts, agendas, programs, expense accounts, plan schedules and other documents relating to the business of the Association. The first section of this AID deals with the "Presidential Papers". The remainder details general correspondence, memos, personnel paperwork, budget documents, news clippings and magazine articles, programs and meeting agendas, grants documentation, committee and membership resolutions, teaching aids and other paperwork related to the functioning of the American Anthropological Association. Since none of the administrative positions of the Association were full-time until the Executive Secretariat became so in the 1950's, the vast bulk of business was necessarily carried out by mail. The Presidential correspondence is largely letters and memos exchanged between the President, the Executive Board, and the other officers of the Association. Also included is correspondence with staff of the different Association publications. Subjects covered by the Presidential correspondence include nomination and election of officers, arrangements for the annual meeting of the Association, meetings of the Executive Board, selection of representatives to other organizations, committees, congresses, conferences, openings of museums or to inaugurations of college and university presidents, and the business of running Association publications. Most of the "Presidential Papers" series include correspondence with the Viking Fund, Inc., a foundation established in 1941 by Dr. Axel Leonard Wenner-Gren for the promotion and support of scientific, educational and charitable enterprises. The foundation created the Viking Fund Medal and Award in Anthropology which was given every year. Dr. Paul Fejos was the Director of Research for this foundation and his correspondence is important. In 1951, the Viking Fund became the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. In 1950, the American Anthropological Association created the A. V. Kidder Award, which was to be presented every three years. Correspondence related to this award deals with the selection committee, their choices and the actual presentation. Other correspondence deals with the various projects, problems, and business of the Association. It includes the documents of the Committee on Radioactive C14, Committee on Scientific Freedom, the Point LV Training Manual, and positions on race-related issues. Persons and organizations included among the correspondents are: Margaret Mead, Dr. L. S. B. Leakey, Drew Pearson, George P. Murdock, Secretary of State Dean Acheson, Dr. Richard Morgan, the National Science Foundation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Social Science Research Council, U.S. National Park Service, and the Department of State. Series I. President's Correspondence Most of this collection has been arranged chronologically by month within each folder; however, most series contain some unarranged material. Correspondence, memos, postcards, statements, notes, lists, sample ballots, and Western Union telegrams. Material concerns elections of Fellows, Viking Medal in Cultural Anthropology, the annual meeting including mention of hotel arrangements for "Negroes," publications - including Statement on Human Rights, Carnegie Corporation grant to establish an Executive Secretariat, financial assets and reports and nominations to the Executive Board. His situation is related to the "Case of the Hollywood Ten," for which background material is included. Some correspondence concerns the Mundt-Nixon Bill, which dealt with freedom of expression, and the advisability of the Association taking political stands. A newspaper column by Eleanor Roosevelt dealing with Communism, and one by Drew Pearson referring to a specific Anthropologist and the resultant complaints are included.
