DY, DANILO T. - I am presently working (my dissertation actually) on the "Nutrient interaction between macro-invertebrates and cultured seaweeds" with emphasis on echinoderm species commonly found in Philippine coral reefs. I tried to quantify the ammonium and phosphate excretions of the sea star, Protoreaster nodosus, the sea urchin, Tripneustes gratilla and the brittle star, Ophioarachna incrassata. I also plan to conduct a study on the effects of sea urchin density on the growth and photosynthesis of a cultured seaweed, Kappaphycus alvarezii and possibly quantify the role of echinoderms (specifically, sea urchins) in supplementing nutrients to the cultured seaweeds in coral reef platforms.
