INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING ROLOnline

You have three choices:

1. Browse and read the ROL on-line. For this purpose, it is best to use the HTML version on the World Wide Web, which allows you to move directly to specific sections by clicking on the topics listed in the Table of Contents.  You can print entire sections simply by using your browser's print command or more limited sections of text by highlighting the text of interest before printing.

THESE FILES ARE LARGE so your Browser may need a lot of time to fetch the pages.

2. Download the entire document.  This option is preferrable if you want to print the entire document using a word processor.

We have created two versions of the ROL for IBM-PC compatible computers. The choices are Microsoft Word or WordPerfect; for either, we have intentionally used older file formats as indicated to insure compatability with both new and old versions of the word-processing software. (Please note that page numbers may not match the original document exactly because of the vagaries of reformatting.)

We are new at this and we have not worked out all the bugs in the system yet. We apologize if you are having trouble downloading. Please contact us and describe the problems you are having so we can try to sort them out. Send email to tboucher@geocities.com .

3. Search the new ROL database. Click here to reach the database: http://egiwcruzool.zoo.ox.ac.uk/ROL/Rolhome.htm . Note that this will take you out of BIRDNET. To return to BIRDNET, use your BACK button. Thanks to Will Cresswell, Lecturer in Ornithology at the Edward Grey Institute, Oxford University, for developing this database. It is still a work in progress and continual improvements will be made. Plans are underway to enter data from every published issue of ROL, but please be patient as this will take some time.

Suggestions for searching:

Subjects listed in the Table of Contents are linked to the subject categories of abstracts.

Issues can be searched while browing the HTML version. Go to your browser's Edit menu, choose Find (Ctrl + F), and enter the word or code number to search for, i.e., author, scientific name, subject code number, or geographic region, as given in the Table of Contents. You may also find it helpful to search for other key words or taxonomic synonyms. Search every likely category for relevant articles. Abstractors and editors use their best judgment in classifying entries, but each abstract is assigned to only one category and it is often difficult to classify a multifaceted paper. While the entries have been checked several times, spelling errors may remain, and these will thwart searches.

Entries can be searched by downloading the document and using your word processor's search function (see instructions for downloading, above).

We encourage you to download issues, wholly or in part, so that they can be searched off-line, using any word processor. In this manner you can also search more than one ROL at a time (which you cannot do online). These issue files will not remain available online forever, yet they should be useful for many years, so by downloading you will have them for your own use.

Each issue is available in PC Word and WordPerfect file versions. We regret that we will not be able to provide Macintosh versions. You can download the HTML version, but it is likely to lose the formatting, making it difficult to read, and downloading is likely to take a long time because the file is not compressed. Most issues of the ROL will take from 50 to 150 pages of paper, if printed using a relatively small pitch size and narrow margin settings.

Hints for using the database format: Keep in mind that until recently, ROL did not include keywords in its abstract system, and many journals do not use keywords. Therefore, when searching, be sure to search all fields, not just the keyword field.
