Monitoring bird populations: why, how, where, and who

In 1998, The Ornithological Council and the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center co-sponsored a workshop at the North American Ornithological Conference to look at bird monitoring programs in North America and in the United Kingdom.  Until this workshop, there had been no complete assessment of monitoring programs for all bird taxa. The 1998 workshop, which is part of a larger effort by BRD to develop monitoring standards and protocols for all bird taxa, included wading birds, seabirds, and shorebirds.
