Many of the U. S. State Birds were chosen before the trend of standardization of English common names began. Therefore, the "official" state bird name may be different than the name the species is now known by. In the case of non-domestic birds, when the "official" name is different than the name listed in the American Ornithologists' Union Checklist of North American Birds (1983), the AOU name appears in parentheses. The AOU names are more likely to be found in modern fieldguides.
States are listed in alphabetical order. Links from state names are to state bird checklists, not all are housed at BIRDNET, so you'll need to use your back button to return to this list from those.
